In a world full of negotiation, getting the best bargains, the best bang for our buck, why is it so few of us invest in our lifespan? Is it that we don't perceive the option between life and death as a reality, or do we just not know how we are removing weeks and months and years from our lives through bad lifestyle investments.
Did you know that whilst our lifespan (the potential for our bodies to continue normal functioning) is increasing through evolutions in medical science, our life expectancy (the expected number of years we will live) remains static? The reason: disease. All those age related diseases like cardiovascular disease, Type II diabetes, Alzheimer's, cancer. All of these diseases result from the break down of normal cell functioning. That breakdown is mostly caused through the overloading of the cells with toxins.
Our body is extremely efficient in transporting nutrients to cells and ridding the cells of toxic wastes. These wastes result from normal cell function. However, if we overload the cells with toxins and do not provide sufficient cell nutrients to retain normal cell processes; the cell functioning starts to break down. Initially this leads to sluggishness of the body. It then progresses to the breakdown of functioning in other parts of the body; key organs like the heart, liver, brain and kidneys. In its most advanced toxic state, the cell DNA is damaged, resulting in the production of mutated cells, commonly known as cancer.
And do you know the main reason this happens? YOU! The everyday choices you make. The environments you live and work in. The foods you ingest. The stress you expose yourself to. The lack of body detoxification. If you overload a truck, the axle breaks. If you put the wrong fuel in your car, the engine performs poorly or not at all. If you put poison on your garden, it dies. These all seem logical choices to us. Yet many of us are making exactly those types of choices with our bodies every day. Maybe it's because for many years we just didn't know any better. Maybe it's because we don't experience the impact of poor care right away. We all know how great it feels when we are out enjoying fine wines and rich foods - it's only hours later that we experience indigestion and hangovers. Use this example of a short time span result to remind yourself of what you are doing to your body. Are you killing yourself?
If we kill someone else - it's regarded as a major felony. So what makes us think we are any less guilty in killing ourselves 10, 20 or 30 years before your time? That's how much difference it makes. Aging is a normal process. Aging faster than normal is not. Adopting antiaging principles by age 30 can add 30-40 years to a life expectancy. Even starting as late as 45 can add 10-15 years. Antiaging principles do not mean giving up meat, alcohol, chocolate or many of the other things you enjoy. It also doesn't mean working out at the gym every day. It's no more complex than operating a bank account. You just ensure that you are adding more to your life bank balance than you are taking away; giving your body the chance to do what it is designed to do, keep you alive and functioning well.
Over the coming months I will be writing a number of articles outlining each of these antiaging principles and giving you options to incorporate into your lifestyle.
